This is my attempt at resolving issue #21 (closed).
The install scripts change the version to the current git revision, and also marks it as dirty if there are uncommitted changes. I assume that package maintainers will not use the install scripts, but that should be fine as long as they only use release versions. Note that the version number still needs to be manually updated in the python file.
